I've recently had IE6 auto-updated, and now its even more inclined to impose its will than it used to be.

A few years ago I got sick of IE5 (or 4 maybe, who can keep track) creating a "Links" folder every time it was started. I don't want a Links folder, and, by George, I was not going to have one. I created a preposterously simple tool called dellinks.exe, which simply watches the appropriate folder and deletes it when IE creates it. Ha!

http://synesis.com.au/resources/dellinks.zip

Now IE6 seems even more aggressive in its creation of the Links folder, in that it also creates entries "Customize Links", "Free Hotmail", "Window" and "Windows Media". This is like getting big-brothered up the back door!

If you wish, please feel free to install dellinks.exe. I have a (manually
created) entry in

  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

of

  "DelLinks" = "c:\bin\dellinks.exe"

and now I am only bothered by the mind-warping swill for about half a second, until dellinks spots it and kills it.

Feel free to do the same.

Are you saying that it creates links *each* time you start it? I think I was experiencing something like that so I just filled the links folder with favorites that I put in purgatory (note that I have about 20 folders for links, each categorized. When I find a link I like I first put it in purgatory (or "Links") before moving it later). IE doesn't seem to throw anything in there anymore.

Don't grok your comments, old chum

What I am saying is that it (re-)creates a folder within Favourites called "Links", and that latterly it also puts unsolicited links to M$ stuff in that folder.

Neither of these is desirable or acceptable to me, hence the use of dellinks.exe (which has to run constantly, because IE does this every time you open a new window!!)

Mozilla is awesome. I love the tabbed browsing feature. Have you tried Galeon (http://galeon.sourceforge.net)? I used it when it was in alpha status and liked it. Haven't used it since though...
