Web pages just take a long time to load. Dsource is much better now after the hardware upgrades, but still there's no way a forum with all its frames and images and fancy layouts can beat the speed of what is basically the download of raw text from a server. > > And maybe there's an information density issue a bit too. Forums tend to have a lot of empty space on the screen. They fill up the screen with a bunch of blank space, and then are forced to put a big row of links to more pages of the stuff that wouldn't fit [prev|1|2|3|4|5|next] at the bottom. > > Forums also seem to encourage people to make frivolous 'me too' comments for some reason, also contributing to the lack of information density. > > --bb That becomes even more important if you're using dial-up. -- Carlos Santander Bernal |

Another part is that NNTP just transmits the content, forums send a bunch of junk along with it. The main part though is that NG's allow much richer clients. With a forum, no Internet connection right now == nothing at all. The client I use is just fine running off line. Also it will auto check for new post, download them, sort them, search them, go back and, in one fell swoop, get the last 65K posts. > > The reason why I ask is I'd like to write RSS output for TracForums > sometime in the future. p.s.
If you do RSS make sure that the pages it points to (one page per post I would hope) are really light weight:
Link to post this replies to
Link to full thread
content
links to replies
No images, CSS, frames or other stuff, just what I want to read

Bah! I actually didn't want to start that kind of a discussion. :\ (I do like both ways, btw. They have their advantages.)
