I am wondering how to test D functions that manipulate filestores.

In Python I'd wheel out pytest and create fixtures that use tempfile module functions to create temporary directories and files. I'd also try and use Hypothesis to do some property based testing using randomly generated directories and files.

Moral of this story, I haven't done real D programming in quite a while, and am having to re-learn stuff.
