Hmmm. This article makes it sound like all of dmd was closed-source rather than just the backend, and it would be easy to come away thinking that Symantec created D. :|

Well, at least it's helping get the word out that dmd is fully open-source now.

Typical news source oversimplifying the issue.  But at least it's getting the word out.  No coverage is bad coverage, after all.
