This is very very annoying. Every time I open one of these messages I get a huge pregnant 5-second pause, along with the Mac Beach Ball (hourglass) while this message is opened in my news reader. Whatever this is, can we get rid of it? -Steve |

Sounds like something's wrong with your news reader.

But it only happens on these messages that come "via Digitamars-d," and consistently so. What could be the difference. I've used this newsreader for years (opera), never had this problem. -Steve |

Its not the client, its happening on the web interface as well.
Most notably for Manu's posts.

another side-effect: no threading is occurring on d.bugs on my newsreader. It used to thread these messages properly.
For some reason, the long pauses have gone away.

I noticed for a while now that Manu's posts are very large, even though there aren't that many lines of text in them. Examining the posting source shows that the content of Manu's posts are repeated, once in HTML and once in plain text.
Perhaps the delay is because your newsreader is trying to load an HTML rendering engine for Manu's posts, which it would not for regular text ones.

I still haven't worked out how to even use a newsreader with the ntp server. I'm still relying on the web interface. So I'm definitely not alone in seeing this one.

Thunderbird is a very good newsreader. A lot of folks here use it.

I tried it for a bit. Couldn't get used to it. It just felt like an
inconvenience.
I'm sure it's great, it's just unfamiliar to me, and it feels a bit
over-kill installing a whole big software package for no reason other
than reading one mailing list.
I like gmail. I've been using it for the better part of 10 years, and I can access it from anywhere. Installing client software to read email feels like I'm back on my Amiga in the 90's ;)
