It seems like some in this newsgroup have way too much free time at hand - - and, well underestimate the resources required even by tiny projects.

May I suggest that those first try to help existing projects before starting new ones?

A list of a few projects that might not be that "sexy" but are in my view essential for D's further development:

GDC - D for GCC
http://home.earthlink.net/~dvdfrdmn/d/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/gdcmac/

Ares - Second Coming of Phobos http://www.dsource.org/forums/viewforum.php?f=31

GDB name mangling: http://www.dsource.org/forums/viewforum.php?f=58

DStress - test suite for DMD/GDC http://dstress.kuehne.cn/www/dstress.html http://developer.berlios.de/pm/?group_id=2732

This list is by no means complete and present only my very personal view.

Thomas

Is there any task or project to work on for good-novice programmers? The projects seem complicated to work on, for an average programmer.

I have plenty of time but too little skills.

How about reviewing/extending/updating the documentation? http://dsource.org/tutorials/ http://www.quit-clan.de/docwiki/

Dare to test your D knowledge? https://developer.berlios.de/pm/task.php?group_id=2732&group_project_id=898&func=browse&set=open

Almost very project has some "easy" tasks: http://dsource.org/forums/ http://sourceforge.net/softwaremap/trove_list.php?form_cat=552

Documentation help would be invaluable, imo.

Ah! Perhaps I was being unclear about my intentions, I appologize for this. I am not seeking to scatter resources even more, rather, I would like to create and "umbrella project" which contains resources for anyone wishing to contribute to the development of D.

As it is now, the projects are scattered over many different websites, having no central communication method or documentation. Even finding the different projects can be hard. And the threshold for entering into any of them is a bit too steep for beginners, and even if there is stuff for them to do, they really cannot find out what that is. (Well, this is what I experience anyways)

And those are excellent links you have got there! I didn't even know of the dstress page. Mind if I nab'em? :)

David, what type of documentation do you need most badly? I am thinking improved install docs for targets, and perhaps GDC source documentation.

I was wondering why would anyone use Ares? :) It's actually the same as Phobos!
