This is something I would love to go to, but am not willing to pay the large cash to go to.

It probably wouldn't be to difficult for me to make it... after all, I'm just north of there by several hours. :)

Hmm. Judging from http://www.frappr.com/d , it looks like holding the conference somewhere around Munich would put it with in easy reach of the maximum number of people.

...But it's hard to tell from the frappr map. Sometimes people's markers get piled on top of each other, and of course, lots of people just aren't on the map.

I won't be coming either way unless it's in Tokyo. :-) Or co-located SIGGRAPH 2007 in San Diego.

To record whole event is a great idea indeed! And perhaps beside publishing on google video/youtube it would be nice to have high quality version distributed via bittorrent.

I don't think frappr is an accurate indicator of the online presence. I removed myself from the map there because I didn't like being associated with the site. The main site was so full of junk groups, at the time, that I didn't want any of my personal information near it. I had no trust in the site.

As far as location goes, that will always be a tough decison, and usually the only practical one is to default to the location closest to the designer. :)

It is unfortunate, though, that more Europeans couldn't be involved in such a Conference. It's clearly evident that some of the most influential D community members are from overseas.

Astoria is near Cannon Beach, which boasts probably the most scenic coastline in the US. The Oregon coasts near Astoria have some incredible beaches, further south highway 101 is famous for being scenic.

Filmed in Los Angeles. The movie "Sleepless in Seattle" was actually filmed in Seattle. "Goonies" and "Kindergarten Cop" were filmed in Astoria. Neither show much of the town.

That is not to be missed.

Boeing has nice factory tours open to the public. The Boeing Flight Museum has amassed an incredible collection, it's not to be missed if you have the slightest interest in aviation. They even have an SR-71 and a Concorde! If the weather's good, you can even hitch a ride on a biplane there.

You won't see anything there - it's just a bunch of office buildings with rather tight security.

I'm sure that can be arranged.

Indeed. Not to mention I'd like to finally see the face of the man behind the language ;)

I'd love to come to the Westcoast, but as other have hinted this would most likely require somewhere around US$ 2000-3000 for most Europeans.

Co-hosting somewhere in Europe should enable quite few more to take part in this gathering. Yes renting a second place and providing the video infrastructure is no replacement for a person-to-person meeting.

Ouch! That's expensive! It's no where near that costly to fly from here to Europe. My Trip to Manchester, England this month cost me just over $1080 Canadian (about $950 US) return and that wasn't even an exceptionally competitive price (although the only available at the time). I admit that its certainly cheaper making the trip from here to there. That does seem to favour the idea of a European convention someday. I certainly wouldn't mind. I'm starting to like any excuse for a little holiday. :)

An interesting idea. By "Co-hosting" do you mean a realtime video-conference of sorts? Or do you just mean just hosting another conference in Europe on another occasion?
