I live nearby, perhaps an 8 hour drive.

But September is quite a ways off. Anything can happen in 3 months time. If nothing prevents me, I will attend too.

A. No.
Q. Does top-posting make sense?

In emails to non-newsgroup people: yes!
I've sent several mails where the receiver doesn't think I've answered anything (or doesn't read everything) because outlook always top-posts.
But here? No

http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1855.txt:

" - If you are sending a reply to a message or a posting be sure you
summarize the original at the top of the message, or include just
enough text of the original to give a context. This will make
sure readers understand when they start to read your response.
Since NetNews, especially, is proliferated by distributing the
postings from one host to another, it is possible to see a
response to a message before seeing the original. Giving context
helps everyone. But do not include the entire original!"

But yes, you're sadly right.

That paper is read as often as the EULA.

And I really doubt anyone but programmers know rfcs exist.
RMS doesn't let people send him documents in proprietary formats - let's all refuse to read top-postings with an auto-reply with this link :)

It also helps if people remove bits of the message they are not addressing leaving only that needed to understand the message in the thread context.

Of course there are circumstances where top posting and keeping all previous material in the email is a good thing. It is just that email lists such as this are not one of them.

But of course all the RFCs relate to an era of 9.6kbs lines and UUCP. In this WWW era everyone assumes sending huge HTML email encoded in bizarre Unicode encodings is not only mandatory, but also polite.

And anyway RFCs were never actually binding, they were just proposals!
