Would prices be lower if we did it off season?

I just checked with www.expedia.com for a weekend in late March round trip Seattle <=> Frankfurt. Fares range from $518 on up. Car rental, add another $200 - $300 (guessing). Hotels in Astoria, can probably do for $100/night. Seattle hotels are probably higher.

It's a lot of money, no two ways about it.

Let's make the European D Conference 2007, say in October, it can be in any European hub such as Amsterdam, Paris, London.

I think the flights are much cheaper going from here to there... Did you check the other way around? It seems that it makes a difference even thought it's a round trip either way? Not sure why.

Hotels are pretty expensive... would almost be better to find a way to camp out. That's one way to get to know new country. I always try to find the least expensive route, even if it means a little hardship. :)

That'll be nice. Since presentations are held, perhaps people can turn them into papers for the online D journal?
After the massive migration to D caused by going 1.0 in january (besides D being a kick-ass language to program in) there might be an increased demand for quality papers...

Well if I have to spend a few hundred, just in airfare, then that pretty much puts me in a campground someplace too. Then there's the last mile: transportation.

I'm googling around, but I'm not seeing much in the way of camping that's drivable to downtown. :(

I don't suppose one could book flights in the US for a foreign traveler? Even two round trips at that cost would be cheaper than one booked in Europe, or so it seems.

That's what I was wondering about two round trips. Just "miss" the legs that you don't need and make sure they don't cancel the ticket altogether for doing so. Assuming that is actually legal, of course.

I did that once years ago, when a "weekend stay" roundtrip cost less than half. So I bought two roundtrips, and used one leg of each. Crazy.

Realtime.

Yes, ca. 1/2-2/3 of the season prices.
