I clicked through the Flipcause payment procedure because I know that is the preferred channel, and ticked the box for "I'd like to cover the processing fee so 100% of my contribution goes to D Language Foundation." This adds $20.29 to the bill; is that expected? Is it still cheaper than PayPall?

If you pay your $408 registration fee through PayPal, the foundation pays a processing fee of $18.25, so we only keep $389.75. If this was a donation, that's the end of it. But it's not a donation. We still need the full $408 as every dime will go to paying expenses and covering the VAT -- there's no profit to be had here -- so we end up paying a total of $36.50 for every early-bird registration that goes through PayPal. That total will increase when we start charging the normal registration fee. That's cheaper for registrants, more expensive for us.

So the Flipcause processing fee isn't much higher than PayPal's. Now, if you choose not to cover the fee, then we will have to cover it and will still end up doubling it to make use of the full amount. However, in this case, Flipcause guarantees us a minimum 1.5% processing fee since we're already paying a pretty hefty annual fee (which will be totally worth it for the services they offer, IMO, once we start making full use of them). We'll have to pay the full amount at the time you submit your form, but once a quarter they will reimburse us for anything we paid over 1.5%. But that's just for the processing fee. The extra $20.29 to replace the deduction is still gone.

Essentially, if you're donating money through Flipcause, the more people who cover the processing fee the better, but it won't hurt us as bad as the PayPal fees people don't do so. But when registering for DConf, it's a big help when you cover the processing fee.
