The best idea I had today: rename D into :D

* Easier to google
* the :D experience (Satisfied Customers smile)
* :D associates with programming, it is symbol in f.e. LISP and Ruby
* backwards compatible: no need to update sitename, etc.
* Its predecessor is :C, a very very unhappy language

I hope :D parses in D community.

The search results seem to be identical whether you search for D or :D, so the colon seems to be ignored. Of course, the fact that dlang.org comes up first could just be because google taylors its results to you, and we're both people who deal with D (and presumably search for it from time to time) already.

This was exactly my point – prepending a colon doesn't magically make the name "easier to google" (if the proposal was even meant serious in the first place).

I used a completely fresh browser session and was connected via my university network, so unless Google does a really worrying amount of tracking…

If you're logged in, it'll use that, and it'll probably use your IP, but if you weren't logged in, and your IP wasn't one that you'd had before, then unless they're tracking via cookies, then I wouldn't expect them to be tracking you. It's actually possible to do a fairly good job of tracking you if you have javascript and/or flash enabled, because they can get at the list of fonts and whatnot on your computer, making you rather unique very quickly unless you have a _very_ standard setup (there was a paper about it not too long ago that got referenced on slashdot), but I wouldn't expect them to be going to all of that trouble. So, it sounds like it's fairly likely that dlange.org is starting to be the winning hit for searching the letter D, which is a good thing.

I think that is a great idea. Or at least, make it the official logo/mascot, or the unofficial name.

It is these kinds of details give programmers a more personal bond with the language they are coding in.

Yep, I regretted the Google suggestion soon afterwards, because :D is more common than D in other contexts.

But I do think :D is a better brand, more recognizable, and D sure needs a little help in that area. So if the search results do not change... that at least leaves the option open.

Anyway, the post was for your entertainment. But from what we entertain the future springs. So surely D future is :D ...
