There are a lot of funny statistics we can produce
from the newsgroup posts.

Here are some statistics on the country who posted
messages in the D newsgroup:

There are about 28900 messages,
posted from 3869 unique ip addresses
allocated to the 51 following country:
(eg: 4 of those ip addresses where from Argentina)

      4 "Argentina"

Are those numbers the IP addresses?

I am embarrassed to note that I've posted 1700 messages (Walter's done 4255),
most of which were from Australia (100 or so from the UK last month), but that'd
be from only about 3 addresses.

Can you do a trawl by poster, see who else is a total gasbag?

Of course IP address are not always accurate. Most people use at least two IP addresses and that's not including using different machines or changing internet providers. But it's interesting, thanks for this info.

Yes. This list list of ip has been produce in the following way:
1. extract 28751 ip addresss from the X-Trace header in the post
2. keep only one occurence of each address (gives 3869)
3. get the country for each address
4. count the number of occurence of each country.

Ive also done a few from Australia(nowhere near as
many as Mathew).

When on a dial-up account usually the individual
is assigned a new IP address on each connection,
isnt that true?
I dont believe that there are that many users in
Australia, especially on this NG.

In fact id be surprised if there were more than 6.

There's normally two per IP. One is used as an alternative. Of course sometimes the IP changes there address as well.
