You might like to try "Pan"

It's the newsreader I currently use on Linux.  It works quite well and the display is quite configurable.  You should be able to get it working on Fedora.

Also, the newsreader that comes with kde is quite good.

Have you tried the thread view? Just click the cartoon talking bubble to the left in the list of posts. Works like a charm (although it can be (was in previous versions, at least) somewhat hard to find new posts in old threads).

If you click the leftmost column header the threads should collapse to tree view just like Outlook.  I use Thunderbird for my mail in Windows and love it. Another nice aspect is that if you dual boot you can share the same profile between Windows and Linux.

I have a dual boot machine (Slackware/Fedora). I'm using only Slackware actually and in Slack std.socket works well.

Thunderbird is very good, but I am using KNode.
