I don't see that there was ever a response to the WinXP thread.
SC32 is completely unsable on my system, which is running v8.32.

That brings me to the next question: What's the easiest way to update
my 8.32 CD installation to the latest fix level?

With WinXP thread?
I have been using XP for 1.6 years with DM and have no problems...
