It is becoming annoying to click and check each NG for newer messages, as the OE continues to display wrong 'unread messages' on the DigitalMars news server.

Consider c++.stl.hp group ... this has no messages inside, still the newsreader shows '16'. It reappears even after 'catching up' - this means it is sent by the server. Even after considering the fact that OE might have a goofup in its logic, why should the server send this number '16'? This indicates that the message pruning and reindexing on the server also has a goofup....

How about checking the server and ensuring that it does not send incorrect info to OE? In the worst case restore the unpruned messages??

FWIW this behaviour is the same for the Netscape 7.0 newsreader. . .

It's worth a lot. Jan has been telling us that this is purely an artefact of Outlook or Outlook Express.

I'd very much welcome a resolution to this, since it is very tiresome to go through the process that Rajiv describes.

btw, has anyone else noticed a dramatic drop in newsgroup postings since this problem's been present? I wonder what the stats are on it? It can't be good for Digital Mars commercially ...

We are well aware of the wonderful support Jan has been providing for these
newsgroups, but I guess he is simply unaware of the large number of people
affected and annoyed by this.

Well, that is the only news reader I have seen the problems with.
I have been searching on how to reset the articles counts in INN, but have not find a conclusive answer.

I have not noticed a dramatic drop in newsgroup postings. In the past there always have been days without any postings.

I just saw 50 new messages appear in the D group in the space of 3 hours. I'm never going to catch up!
