If you take Tiobe as the amount of people who use the language (of course it doesn't but let use assume so), D would need grow 7x larger to move 11 places up the chain (assuming that of course other factors remain constant).  Also D would need to double its population size to just to overtake Ruby.

I think Tiobe may be a good tool for forming a battle/marketing plan for D.

For instance, Python shares many similarities to D, most importantly its funding is limited and it was developed by one guy.  Perhaps some covert surveys could be done in these programming languages forums to try to figure out why people jumped on the band wagon.  My questions in working are:

How long have you been using language X?
Why did you originally start using X?
What features do you like about X?
How do you think X could be improved?

Another thing Tiobe points out is that Java seems to have the biggest slice of the pie.  Meaning that you don't need to shake as many apples from that tree to increase size of D's apple pie.

Of course you need to demonstrate D as a better alternative to Java. Maybe that means finding the most annoying Java traits and demonstrating how D is better or improving D along those lines.

I would like to know what other data could be mined from Tiobe (http://www.tiobe.com/tpci.htm).

Allow me to submit a different idea.

Tiobe ranking for D is crap:
there is no way D should be before lisp, ada, cobol, pascal, hell, even rpg on "skilled engineers, courses and third party vendors.", no way!

Who believes that is completely alienated from reality.
(I was gonna say idiot but that's not true - people might just be ignorant)

So Tiobe as a marketing tool will just bring us at best ignorant people.

I have to say this because nobody else will.

I have no doubt that D the population size will more than double.

I agree that Tiobe ranking is not accurate (and have never said otherwise), however it appears to a least present a picture of D's presents or hype on the web which is the best marketing tool D has. Also the languages that you would expect are at the top.

I think a language like ADA for instance has less presents on the web because they are used in military and NASA type places.  How many Military programmers do you know who post stuff up on the web?

Well, having a look at the Ruby on Rails Hype, and IMO the may be most imortant point, available libraries/bindings ... Then we simply have to hope that a working Java2D translator will be available asap. Otherwise the goal of making D a mainstream language is absolutely unrealistic.
Means further : Without having a VERY solid lib. framework D will die within the next 2-3 years.
