I'd be fascinated to read more about how this was done, and the "back-of-the-envelope calculation showed the numbers to be on my side".

But I've been wondering something:  Obviously atoms are not this large, so what are we seeing in that photograph?  atom motion-blur?

A very excited (with lasers) atom giving of a lot (comparatively) of light.
