Well, let me take back the UDF suggestion. I have to replace it on my backup disk too now.

Recently, I learned Linux has zero support for UDF in an aspect I had taken for granted: consistency checking! Apparently, not only is 'fsck' for UDF not working, it is an empty stub that doesn't say so!

For just Linux+Mac compatibility, the Mac's own HFS+ filesystem seems to be a good bet if you don't have ultra-large disks. Otherwise, NTFS?
