ResourceStudio crashes with an "abnormal program termination" error when I load an .rc file.

Can someone please recommend me a better resource editor?

I ran into this problem once before, and I found a good workaround.

Version 1.0 of the resource studio supplied with the Symantec version of the compiler still works pretty well. It is available on the net as a download in a few places. Here's one of them: http://personal5.iddeo.es/ret007ow/tools.html

Unzip the version 1.0 version of RS32 into it's own directory. Then, move all of the files except for the MFC DLLs into the \dm\bin directory. Once you have done that, the IDDE will be able to invoke it and everything. More importantly, it doesn't crash like the 1.01 version.
