Microsoft is revisiting the controversial subject of standards compliance in its implementation of C++, the language created by Bjarne Stroustrup at Bell Labs. Microsoft told ComputerWire last week it plans greater adherence to ISO/ANSI standards in the up- coming release of Visual Studio.NET, codenamed Everett and due in the first quarter of 2003.

The company said its goal is a version of Visual C++.NET in Everett that offers conformance with ISO/ANSI standards in the "high 90s" range - up from a relatively poor 60 compliance range under Visual C++ 6.0.

that is GREAT news!  so if they're adding 30% additional functionality to their product, the price will be 30% of visual 6.0 right?

jeez these guys seem to release "new" products a lot... but it seems to me that the "new" thing is just the "old" thing with a few new bells and whistles and a higher price...

The idea of the note was to prick Walter into finishing namespace support in DMC++ -- and other missing C++ features.

Not that I like or respect MSVC++; but DMC++ has to be "ten times better" to dislodge people from using MSVC++, even on open-source projects (just because of market inertia).  I know, because I've tried to get people started using it.  So this news is yet more reason for them to ignore DMC++ and Walter had better do something <g>.

i know, i've been criticised a zillion times for code with iostream.h and not using std:: but hey i'm sure he's doing the best he can... or is it they?

i think it's good that m$ is talking the talk, but so far it's just talk right? at least walter aint putting out "vapor-ware" and press releases... hey maybe if he "leaked" to the press that dmc++ will be 94.2% compliant by the time the "new" vc is out he could win over some business?
