Hi All! I have Internet access through Virtual Private Network (VPN). Can I setup this connection under Linux? Under Win2k it is quite easy. But I have never configured networking under Linux. Is it possible at all? What components should I install and what general steps should I do? Thanks ahead, Nic Tiger. P.S. I have Mandrake Linux 9.0. |

i have Mandrake Linux 9.0 too ..
well i'm afraid i don't really know what VPN is ..
i guess it is samba + masquerading + firewall [+ proxy][+ dial on demand] isn't it ?
in this case i have some ideas, even if i'm quite newbies.
but before going further i have to go home and do a man vpn ..

Posted in reply to Nic Tiger | Yes it should not be that difficult to do, at least on FreeBSD it is easy. Are you using ADSL or a Cable internet connection?

Posted in reply to Arjan Knepper | I don't really what this abbreviations stand for. I'm connected via Ethernet 10/100 Mbit to city network and there I have a connection to Internet (I have IP address of authorization server, login and password). What type of connection it is? In Win98/Win2k I connect to Internet specifying 'connect through Virtual Private Network' which is city network. Hope this information is enough. Nit Tiger. I looked into it a couple of years ago because I thought I would need to set one up for connecting to one of my clients but never followed up on it because they decided not to use a VPN.
I believe you want to look for "point to point tunnelling protocol" PPTP or something like that. From what I hear it's pretty easy to set up.

Posted in reply to Frank Albe | The Jan 2002 issue of "Linux Journal" has a very nice and detailed article on setting up a VPN gateway. (uses IPSec based VPN gateway with a firewall using a single bootable Linux diskette distribution). See if you could get the issue in your local library. BTW, it begins like this: "A virtual private network (VPN) is a tool that enables the secure transmission of data over untrusted networks such as the Internet. VPNs commonly are used to connect local area networks into wide area networks using the Internet." - Rajiv Bhagwat "Frank Albe" <falbe@mindspring.com> wrote in message news:56ev1vo0aok5ns3qa6vluipatshnpq8k8b@4ax.com... > On Fri, 10 Jan 2003 07:06:01 +0300, "Nic Tiger" <nictiger@progtech.ru> wrote: > > >Hi All! > > > >I have Internet access through Virtual Private Network (VPN). > >Can I setup this connection under Linux? Posted in reply to Nic Tiger | Nic, are you asking how to connect to the internet with Linux or how to set up a home network? Posted in reply to Gregory Peet | I want to connect to Internet. I'm connected to EtherNet and in Windows I connect to my provider's VPN to get to Internet and other people connected to my provider (city wide network). I want to do the same in Linux. For now I have Mandrake 9, but since Mandrake is over maybe I have to switch to RedHat. Thanks ahead, Nic Tiger.
