Funny, he doesn't look anything like I expected. I was imagining more of a Woz or lumberjack look all along.

"harried" can be translated as busy or harassed (as in by more projects than you have time for).

In that regards, yes Walter is very harried

Since a programming language needs a run-time to be used and Tango seems
very successful in the D community, I wonder - does Sean, Kris or Lars
have beards?

Kris does, at least as of the DCon last year.  A minor one at least.
