Hi Guys,

I just wanted to say I am pretty impressed with the revamped D forums. TBH I tried to join in on the conversion many times before the change but the ancient NNTP based approach was just not palatable enough. But needless to say we have come a long way from that.

Having said that I have a question for the veterans...have you at any point considered using a publicly hosted discussion forum (like reddit)?

I miss the ability to edit and monitor my posts (without spamming my inbox). Also the upvote and downvote buttons can come in handy sometimes too (for example if you did not like this post you could downvote it to oblivion).

All sounds fine except this, i hate this kind of stuff. They open doors for all kind of abuses, popularity contests, factions in community and similar distasteful things.

Email Filters! If you are not using an email client that allows you to filter mailing list emails out of your inbox and into folders, you need to be using a better email client...

Or maybe we just need a real forum... I was actually thinking about posting something similar several times already, especially before this new official front end. For people who never used newsgroups etc, it feels extremely awkward at first. And if you're used to normal, modern board softwares, this is like a small down grade. You get used to it of course, but I'm sure this drove people away in the past.
Although it's much better now.

I not onyl got used to it (NNTP), but I've cone to prefer it. (FWIW, YMMV, OMGBBQWTF)

I personally just prefer email. I use a threading mailer, and it allows me to sort through threads, keep those I'm interested in, prune those I'm not interested in, etc., *much* better than any forum software I've ever seen. The thing about discussions is that they tend to bifurcate easily, something that current forum software just can't handle in a nice way without breaking the branching structure somehow.

Plus, with email I get to use text-only, which is a big plus for me because it focuses on the meat of the discussion instead of distracting with pretty graphics. And I can stay away from that resource hog called the browser for yet one more thing. But that's just me... most people don't agree with that. :-)

Do they agree with you or not, the fact is that forum software cannot approach functionality of email/nntp.

Sandeep, FYI, it is still NNTP behind the forum. It is not an ancient protocol, it is still perfectly suitable for what it was made for... HTTP is still an "ancient" protocol, yet you still use it... We still use IRC and we like it. Etc... I guess your problem lies in the client. Yes, the old, web- based news client was awful. New one is amazing.
