They are implemented in the D compiler as part of the language design (modules, no preprocessor, avoidance of ambiguities), and I believe the C++ compiler is faster than most others, although the language doesn"t allow many optimizations, due to the preprocessor and the numerous syntaxic ambiguities.

I believe that is one of the reasons why DigitalMars C/C++ compiles faster than the rest...
