Agree, the current list is not very easy to browse.  At least it's easy to suggest an alternative layout, simply submit a PR for this template:

I just noticed the "Category" dropdown at the top, which is supposed to help with browsing, but doesn't really stand out visually.  It'd be better if the front page were organized with a hierarchical layout grouped by those categories, rather than a long list that just runs together.

What i like about the current layout is the possibility to rapidly try different keyword searches using the browser find-functionality.

I like that too, but it only works when there are quire few packages.
