We had three participants in SAOC 2022. You may have noticed their periodic updates in the General forum. Keeping the community informed through those updates is one of the requirements of the event each year. They also have to submit reports on their progress at the end of each milestone, and their mentors send along evaluations at the same time.
Symmetry provides funding enough to pay each of the participants $1000 for three milestones (up to $3000 total for each participant) and $500 for each mentor at the end of the event. There's also an additional $1000 for one participant who is selected by the judges at the end of Milestone 4 (the end of the event) based on their overall performance throughout the event. That participant is also rewarded with a free trip to the next DConf.
SAOC 2022 ended with three firsts. One of the firsts: no one failed out. Generally, when a participant fails a milestone, they're still given a reduced payment and allowed to continue with a warning (fail again and you're out!), but they're taken out of the running for the final reward. In every previous SAOC edition, one or more participants failed out of the event after failing a previous milestone. This year, not only did no one fail out, no one failed any milestones. That means each participant received the full payment for Milestones 1 - 3. Congratulations to all three of them for sticking through that far!

Teodor Dutu: Replace druntime Hooks with Templates
The next first is that in five editions of SAOC, Teodor is the first person to participate twice. He worked on the same project for SAOC 2021 and continued working on it between events (see his DConf '22 talk about the project.
On a related note, Lucian was working on his project before SAOC started. He also presented it at DConf '22.
And that leads me to the third first. Congratulations to Teodor Dutu, the recipient of the final SAOC 2022 reward and the first person to be selected twice. (Last year, in another SAOC first, the judges were unable to decide between Teodor and Luís Ferreira, so they each received a final payment and a DConf trip.)
I'm still awaiting the final word about DConf '23, but wherever and whenever it's happening, Teo has a free ride whether he's speaking or not. I encourage Lucian and Vlad to submit talks about their projects and their SAOC experience so that they have a chance to join us as speakers.
