Posted in reply to Walter Bright | I don't know what you're doing differently, but on my very vanilla freebsd 8.1 box (the one running the auto-tester), it builds and passes everything quite nicely.

Are _both_ your druntime and Phobos up-to-date? They currently build and pass on the autotester, so they _should_ work on your machine.
