Uh, I was just looking at the HP site and it seems that a new version of OpenVMS is due out. (Yay!) Maybe a D compiler for it isn't such a bad idea after all?

Well, AFAIK C/C++ for Alpha does not support VAX double format anyhow.
(maybe, Cobol does?;-)
