According to Walter, the order should be 'dmd FILE -run', but when I do that I get an error. Writing 'dmd -run FILE' works.

> $ dmd helloworld.d -run
> Error: argument expected for switch '-run'

> $ dmd -run helloworld.d
> hello world

The command line parsing code is specifically written to parse »dmd <compile_args> -run file.d <run_args>« – where did Walter (or better, the docs) say otherwise?

Didn't read the docs, but I'm following a course by Walter right now and apparently he forgot the correct syntax :).
