In the "View" menu you will see the option "Display Attachments Inline"
and you will see that it is checked. I will agree, though, that its
houldn't be active by default.

I use Thunderbird on Windows and find it a lot better than OE, but had similiar grieves with setting up read/unread as I wanted. I've recently migrated to Linux (Kubuntu) and there I use KNode in Kontakt. In the start I thought KNode had similar problems, but it was just a matter of setting it up correctly. I now press 'n' to go to the next unread (no matter how the posts are viewed), and when there are no more unread, 'n' moves me to the next group in the list. There is also a mapping for the next unread thread.

Thanks for all the newsclient sugestions, but even better yet were the Thunderbird tips. I guess I judged Thunderbird a bit too soon, without better checking those features.
The unchecking of "Display Attachments Inline", the View->Threads menu options, and the Go-> Next/Previous keyboard shortcuts (N,P, etc.) fix most of the issues I had, so I guess I will keep using Thunderbird.

Thx
