How about a forum that uses a nntp server for storing messages?

It's normal for traffic to drop off substantially in the summer. August is particularly dead. Back in the old Zortech days, we'd not even bother spending money on advertising in August. |

Posted in reply to Thomas Kuehne | Well, some of the main purposes of forums are to:
- track members (NNTP doesn't understand this, iirc.)
- keep track of their preferences (NNTP clients do this currently.)
- allow moderation and similar things (stickies, locking, etc.)
While an NNTP *hookup* could be made, storing it with NNTP wouldn't really work out so well. You'd lose most of the benefits of forums, and lose the benefits of clients as well - in short, you'd be back to the current web interface.
Anyway, I doubt the hosting digitalmars.com is currently with would allow a different NNTP server to be installed (whether by xinetd or what have you) to serve things, so I'm not sure that would work either.

I was thinking about 2 backends: - - plain NNTP for messages (allows: chancel & edit) - - DB of your choice to to store all the added-value data Tracking and preferences aren't the problem. If you customise the NNTP server you could enforce thread locking (-> references header). Stickies can only effect the forum UI not the NNTP side. Granted, the NNTP server could play with Date and Xref ... Every night with my star friends

We talk about Frank Sinatra

Miss Kittin & The Hacker around 2000 maybe.
