I see the digitalmars servers are up and running once again.  They were down for quite a while.

Are www.digitalmars.com and news.digitalmars.com the same machine?  I'd guess so considering that they were down at the same time.  But why is there a failure mode by which www.digitalmars.com was delivering the content of www.digitaldaemon.com instead?

Speaking of downtime, it would be good if we had something on Wiki4D or somewhere, similar in concept to

http://openfacts.berlios.de/index-en.phtml?title=Wikipedia_Status

This would give people somewhere to go when the servers are down.  It could even give people a clue of what's going on and how long it's likely to take to fix (as much as is known).

At my end, the DNS name "digitalmars.com" was unresolvable for a while. "whois" even gave me the IP 1.1.1.1 at one point.

What DID happen??

The server was up, but the T1 line to the server got accidentally turned off by the ISP due to a bureaucratic snafu. By the time that was cleared up, the ISP office responsible for turning it back on had gone home for the day, so it had to wait until the next morning.

This is the longest (by far) outage the digital mars server has had in 7 years. That's an incredibly good track record, and it's all thanks to Jan Knepper.

DNS runs over the same pipe (T1) as the actual domain and as of such would be unreachable.

whois returning 1.1.1.1 has not much do to with the pipe being down since AFAIK this information comes from the registrar. You could have issue's whois too many times which sometimes results in a block.

Yes they are.

That's the first domain on the system and if anything happens the content of that domain will show.

Actually... There are talks and plans about redundancy where the site(s) would be run on several systems on different places in the US and next in EU. It is in the works, but technology has to be in-place/available and budgets have to be approved/allocated.
