Greetings again,

Earlier this month I posted about my indie game, Mayhem Intergalactic (http://www.inventivedingo.com/mayhemig ), which as far as we could tell is the first ever released commercial game written in D.

Well, now Mayhem Intergalactic has another claim to fame: It's been awarded a place in the Student Showcase of the 10th Annual Independent Games Festival Student Competition. This also puts it in the running for the Best Student Game prize, to be announced at the 2008 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, February 18-22. See http://www.igf.com and http://www.gdconf.com for details.

I think it's pretty cool that the first commercial game written in D has won an award like this. :-)

I'll almost certainly be going to the GDC [1], so if anyone else is going, feel free to drop by the IGF Pavilion and say hi.

There'll be a lot of other developers at the conference (obviously), so this is also a good opportunity to promote D, if anyone has any relevant reading material or suggestions.

Cheers,
Chris Pelling

[1] GDC as in "Game Developers Conference", not "GNU D Compiler". ;-) I keep searching for one of them and turning up search results about the other...

Well done! You deserve it.

I might be there. We'll see.

There's also this game developers meetup club in San Francisco http://gamedev.meetup.com/35/?gj=sj2 its held on the third Tuesday of every month. You can signup on the website for details. I'm not sure if you'll be there at that time however I thought I'd mention it. Its basically a meet, greet and talk about games while eating/drinking. Anyone is free to come along.

Drop by the IGF Pavilion if you do come. :-)

Interesting. I won't be there in January, but the third Tuesday of February is the 19th, and I will be around then. I'll see if I can make it. :-)

My word, it's just like a slightly modernized version of Konquest!

Heck, given time I could write that game. Too bad I'm already busy on mine.

Ah... but you didn't, and ultimately that's what counts. ;-) Which I'm sure you know without me telling you.

Yes, Konquest is from the same sub-genre, and is free and open source. Somehow it doesn't seem to matter. In my humble opinion, Mayhem Intergalactic is significantly better than Konquest. It looks better, sounds better, plays better, has networked multiplayer, and is simply more fun. Granted I'm probably biased. Still, my sales-to-downloads ratio is reasonably healthy for an indie game, so I must be doing something right!

By the way, I'm working on a large update that vastly improves the appearance of the game; it has much better graphics and completely revamped audio, among other features and bug fixes and so on. The current public version pales in significance.

The update should be out well in time for the Game Developers Conference. Then there's the Mac version to work on... I'm keeping busy!

Wow. This is huge. I've been vaguely following D for a couple years
now. More than any blog or powerpoint presentation or conference could
ever do, this demonstrates to me that D is viable.

Oops! Thanks for the heads up. I moved servers a few days ago, and evidently forgot to copy that file across. Knew I'd forget something.

It should work now.

Thanks again,
Chris
