I've noticed, specifically /System/Library/StartupItems (I work for a company writing mail server software which runs on as many OS's as we can manage).

I suspect it has something to do with Windows being case insensitive and vice-versa
(like with almost the SOLE exception of X, everything in linux seems to be lowercase)
