Can someone re-suggest a good news reader for linux...I'm currently using the web interface which is extremely tedious to search for previous posts on this topic.

I'm using Mozilla, but KNode also works.  I also hear that some people really like Thunderbird.

I'm using Pan to read this, which works pretty well.
