the tiobe index measures the popularity of programming languages based on the number of search engine queries. i find this index to be more close to reality:

That's promising. D is in a middle position. When we say popularity, one thing to remember is, everybody is attracted to web programming. So that kind of languages attracts more people. There is only a few people interested in system programming. So a system programming language's popularity could be low. Nothing to worry about that.
