May 06, 2014 Advertising "D Cookbook" on http://dlang.org or http://wiki.dlang.org/Books | ||||

Hello, Walter and I got asked by Packt Publishing about advertising Adam D. Ruppe's "D Cookbook" on http://dlang.org/ or http://wiki.dlang.org/Books. They'd be paying 2-5% of the royalties depending on the ads' prominence. I estimate that would be low in absolute numbers, and would probably go toward defraying our hosting costs. I wanted to ask the community how they'd feel about this. The ads would only advertise Adam's book and we'd have leeway with format and size. Thanks, Andrei |

Posted in reply to Andrei Alexandrescu | Hi, I see no problem with advertising this book if the publisher's bussness isn't shady and the ad is only a pure (let's keep it the D way) link - I mean no eveil spying tech behind that or something similar. At first look this seems to be a great work and deserves advertising. I hope the book will join my TDPL copy as soon as it's easy to get it from Poland. Piotrek |

I see nothing wrong with this as long as the ad doesn't spy on people or link to anything objectionable. It's appropriate advertising.

Education is crucial for the development of the D community, therefore I would even encourage promoting the upcoming Adam's book! :) -- http://dejan.lekic.org |

As long as there's no sound/animation/malware, then it sounds like a great idea. "Non-commercial OSS" doesn't have to mean "no revenue" or "no self-promotion".

It is easy for someone who does not pay for the hosting to say this but since dlang (and wiki) will have a link to the publisher's site anyway, unless advertising brings sizable money, I say let's not do it. Go for it. It's great to see more D books.

The ads would only advertise Adam's book and we'd have leeway with format and size. I have no problem with it. However, I would approach them to ask if they'd rather have it be a sponsored link. Right now, the "Book" link goes to TDPL on amazon, I could envision another link there. -Steve |

Posted in reply to Andrei Alexandrescu | I was gonna ask you all to put it on the community->links page anyway, so if they're willing to cut you in a piece of the action, so much the better. Though I agree that if it is flashy or noisy, say no. I was just thinking text link and I'd be ok with an image link too, but any javascript or flash stuff, forget that. |
