Hi everyone, DFeed (the software running on forum.dlang.org) has been moved to a much faster server. My apologies to everyone who had to endure the slow page load times or failures during the old server's nightly maintenance. This move has been overdue for too long. The old server is now acting as a proxy, so there should be no downtime due to cached DNS records. Please let me know here or on IRC if you notice any problems. |

Thanks! This raises again the question whether we should consolidate hosting so you don't need to pay for that (bus factor etc). Would you want to transfer DFeed to digitalmars?

It does feels a bit snappier now :)

Thanks for the offer, but hosting DFeed isn't costing me anything, since I need this server for several other purposes. Besides, considering the babysitting it needs - whether it's killing spam, or pushing a quick fix - I'd feel more comfortable running it on my own server. The new server is probably quite beefier than the DigitalMars ones, seeing as they're not immune to downtime either :)
As for the bus factor - I've also copied over your SSH key, and all data is backed up nightly. If I can do more to increase it, let me know (I never got a SSH key from Walter).

Thank you! It's pretty fast now!! :)
Btw, I have been using Thunderbird and I frequently see the already read threads (mostly messages of the existing threads) suddenly appear as unread (in bold). Is this happening from your end? If so can you please fix it?
It quickly gets boring to read the same messages over and over thinking they are brand new.. Looks like some kind of synchronization problem..

Searching these newsgroups in Thunderbird now works, and it works pretty fast too!

Sounds good. I have no idea where to login though :o).

Looks like some kind of synchronization problem.. ??? I don't see how Thunderbird is related to the forum... Both Thunderbird and the forum software are newsgroup clients (they both connect to news.digitalmars.com to get and post articles). There is no way for the forum to know which messages you've marked as read, because Thunderbird does not upload that information to the server - it's only stored locally. And even if Thunderbird did upload this information to news.digitalmars.com, DFeed would still have to know how to ask and obtain that information from the server, and identify you among other users (which would be tricky, considering you don't need to provide any identifying information to download articles)... I suppose that DFeed could have its own NNTP server (similarly to what Vibe.news does), allow logging in with the forum username/password, and mark messages downloaded via NNTP as "read" in the web interface... > Searching these newsgroups in Thunderbird now works, and it works pretty fast too! Again not sure how that's related... |
