Your affirmation "all chip" is somewhat exagerated! Anyway, there are fixtures (kind of pantographs) available for manual handling of these small specimens and even a small hot air blower for solrering at once the solder drops of these SMD packages.
Obviously its use is for breadboarding/prototyping and (somewhat less
useful nowadays) repair work.
