Posted in reply to Brad Anderson | Excellent work! Hopefully, this will become a nucleus for a D library similar to Boost.

phpBB which is the system used by dsource's forum is AFAIK _the_
most used forum on the net. It's very easy, very customizable,
full of features (if you want to use them) and IMO great.
I still like the NG very much, though.
Btw: Do others have problems with www.dsource.org today? Seems like
it don't receive my requests. Pinging times out, at least.

Posted in reply to Lars Ivar Igesund | Site is back up.
I'll track down why it was not responding last night. I was home and can't restart it remotely (SSH wasn't responding either).

Did you tried to follow a conversation?
most of the screen space if just that... space, empty.
it's impossible to clearly see the tree of replys,
Did you try to post a reply?
it's very difficult to embed your comments.
Why the avatars? As soon as possible I'll remove those
from my customized view.
(as I do on other forums that type).
(Ok, I had an avatar on another forum...:( but I removed it)
I'm just afraid those forums are taking over...
I guess they are usefull for web based discussions,
just need a carefull customization.
(we're drifting from D discussions)

(are we drifting from D conversation...) > Just to straighten people out here. I had nothing to do with the dsource site creation. All the hard work of building that wonderful site was the result of the efforts of Brad and Justin (jcc7). I just kind of got on the forum early because I was helping with DWT. So...as much as I'd like to take credit for it... I had no involvement at all. Brad did talk to me intially about it, but I lacked the skills necessary...sooo... > I'm just afraid that people think phpBB (whatever) forums are better. > people get blind by things like the avatars and different color > quotes. > I like both ways. But I actually really like the phpBB forums. It's a whole different layout style; quoting and styling is much more powerful than possible here. I would say both the forum and the newsgroup have their own important place. This newsgroup most definitely should remain here for very D centered topics. But the dsource forum helps keep the newsgroup from being overloaded with issues related to D projects. Whenever a D centered issue arises, we say "go post it on the newsgroup so Walter can see it." So it's an excellent way of filtering material. That said, I believe this newsgroup probably should never be replaced with an outside forum. It's doing well as it is, but it's getting heavily loaded with issues better worked on elsewhere. Also, given the number of "newbie" questions that repeatedly surface here, I think the dsource.org forum can handle those better. It's getting a little tiresome seeing the same questions asked here: printf and use of "%.*s" ; trying to access an uninitialized class reference (need to "class A= new A;" before using; etc. Hopefully the ready access of the d tutorials at www.dsource.org can fix that problem. Just an opinion, John |
